Scientific seminar on “German settlement in Azerbaijan: Helenendorf” at BEU

Baku Engineering University (BEU) has hosted a scientific seminar on “German settlement in Azerbaijan: Helenendorf” by Professor of the Department of Social Sciences Abbas Seyidov.

First, the head of the department Humeyra Mustafayeva made a speech and brought to attention the research conducted on the emergence of German settlements in Azerbaijan and their role in our history. In particular, recalling the violent and aggressive attitude of Armenians towards German colonists living in Azerbaijan, H. Mustafayeva noted that the scientific seminar would be useful for our youth to study the historical relations of the Azerbaijani-German peoples.

Later, Professor Abbas Seyidov emphasized that the atmosphere of tolerance established for centuries in Azerbaijan created a favorable basis for German immigrants to establish deep communication with the local population in a short time from the very first time they were resettled here at the beginning of the 19th century. The speaker spoke about the research conducted on the reasons and conditions of the resettlement of Germans to Azerbaijan based on archival documents. He added that in 1818, Germans who were resettled from the Kingdom of Württemberg came to the territory of Azerbaijan and organized the colonies of Annenfeld (Shamkir) and Helenendorf (Goygol), and played an important role in the development of agricultural, grain-growing, horticultural, viticultural, and cattle-breeding sectors in our country. The professor also touched upon the deportation of German immigrants from Azerbaijan to Central Asia, Kazakhstan, and Siberia during World War II, who actively participated in the construction of various facilities in Azerbaijan.

At the end of the seminar, questions of interest to students were answered.
