BEU scientists' project wins Science Foundation competition

The project presented by scientists from the Department of Food and Biotechnology of Baku Engineering University (BEU) has been among the winners of the “Basic Grant Competition-2025” held by the Azerbaijan Science Foundation.

The head of the project is the head of the department, Doctor of Economic Sciences Ravan Rahimov, and the executor is senior lecturer, Doctor of Philosophy in Economics Elshad Yunusov. The research is dedicated to the topic “Synthesis and production technology of ionic-liquid surfactants for the collection of oil and oil products from the surface of water bodies”.

The project, which aims to solve global environmental problems such as oil spills and water body pollution, contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it has both scientific and environmental significance in the areas of SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible production and consumption) and SDG 14 (Life below water).

The research involves the synthesis of environmentally safe, multifunctional, ionic-liquid surfactants, the study of their physicochemical, anti-corrosion, oil-collecting, oil-pressing and bactericidal properties. Ionic liquids are increasingly used in the chemical industry and scientific research in accordance with the concept of "green chemistry". Their low volatility, high thermal and chemical stability, passivity against corrosion and environmental friendliness make these compounds one of the most promising materials.

Prevention of oil pollution in seas and lakes as a result of accidents during modern oil production and transportation is one of the main goals of this project. The development of a new generation of ionic-liquid surfactants will play an important role in the protection of water bodies, as well as in increasing the efficiency of oil production.

The research will also open up new opportunities for the development of green technologies in Azerbaijan, the application of environmentally friendly reagents on an industrial scale, and will also make a significant contribution to the international recognition of the scientific potential of our country.
