BEU organizes forum on COP29

A forum "COP29: Together, in Solidarity for a Green World" has been held at Baku Engineering University (BEU).

At the event moderated by Etibar Kahramanov, senior lecturer of the industrial engineering department, the impact of global environmental problems on the environment, the socio-economic consequences caused by them, green energy and its role in reducing greenhouse gases, the advantages that COP29 will bring to Azerbaijan from an ecological point of view, the impact of climate change on the management of water resources, as well as the direction of the effects on the level changes of the Caspian Sea were discussed.

Speaking at the event, Rashail Ismayilov, head of the Water and Reclamation Scientific Research Institute, emphasized the negative effects of climate change on water resources. Describing water security as a matter of national security of every country, and reminding that the "National Strategy for the efficient use of water resources" was adopted in Azerbaijan in 2024-2040, the head of the department noted that the document envisages the management of water resources, monitoring system, use of new technologies, improvement of water accounting in the initial stage against the background of climate changes, and prevention of hydrocrisis in the later stages, application of more advanced technologies to the water sector. The speaker added that the current works on the effective use of the water potential of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur economic regions, as well as the construction of new water reservoirs, are among the steps taken by Azerbaijan to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Later, speaking on the topic of effective waste management, Elnur Aliyev, Deputy Head of the Department of Environment and Labor Protection of "Clean City" OJSC, drew attention to the fact that by 2030, solid household waste in the world will exceed 4 billion tons, and this means a serious risk. He said that the management of solid household waste affects negatively not only the atmosphere, but also groundwater, soil. Enumerating the positive aspects of the creation of landfills that meet sanitary standards, the deputy head mentioned the use of gases obtained from waste for heating purposes. He added that the formation of methane gas in mixed waste is unstable and it is difficult to prevent it.

Alternative energy expert of AZGREEN Engineering and Environmental Services Orkhan Karimzada spoke about the damage caused by greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. He said that the whole world already sees the way to reduce the danger in the transition to alternative energy. Emphasizing that the countries of the world do not have equal opportunities in the transition to renewable energy sources, the expert said that Azerbaijan, which has sufficient wind and solar energy potential, has taken successful steps in the direction of renewable energy.

The forum continued its work in a discussion environment, and the participants' questions on the topic were answered.
