Work done to lay foundation for training of researchers on climate change

Hanuel Lee, a staff member of INHA University of the Republic of Korea (South Korea), taught the subject “Hydrology” in the “Summer School” held at Baku Engineering University (BEU). Sharing his thoughts on the summer teaching process, the Korean teacher stated that the work done within the framework of the international dual degree program implemented between BEU and INHA University is very important for the future. In his opinion, the steps taken will also create a basis for the training of researchers at BEU who will contribute to the formation of cities that are resilient to the negative effects of climate change.

Providing information about the subject, Hanuel Lee emphasized that “Hydrology” is the science that studies the water cycle, which includes processes such as precipitation, evapotranspiration, losses and flow. He added that in recent years, precipitation variability has been increasing as a result of climate change. This, in turn, increases the intensity and scope of natural disasters such as floods and droughts worldwide. He mentioned, “In such conditions, calculating the volume of runoff based on precipitation and water loss within the basin is of great importance in terms of protecting the water balance. By studying hydrology, we can balance water and reduce the damage caused by floods and droughts.”

Of note, the summer education process, which is a continuation of the academic year and is held within the framework of the dual diploma program implemented between BEU and INHA, covers a 3-week period. This year’s “Summer School” involved 15 professors and teaching staff from INHA University.
