Prospects for sustainable development of liberated territories discussed

An online conference on "Prospects for sustainable development of the liberated territories" was organized by the Department of World Economy at  Baku Engineering University (BEU).

At the conference, Shahriyar Mukhtarov, Head of the World Economy Department of BEU, PhD. in Economics, Associate Professor, extended his congratulations on the occasion of historical victory achieved under the leadership of Victorious Commander-in-Chief, President Ilham Aliyev. He also commemorated our martyrs liberating our lands at the expense of their lives and wished speedy recovery to our veterans. Noting that the conference was dedicated to the strategy of restoration in the liberated lands, the Head of the Department stated that there was a need to clarify how these procedures were to be implemented. He also added that for this purpose, scientists from different countries, especially in the United States, were invited to partake in the discussion.

Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs at BEU, assoc.prof. Elchin Suleymanov emphasized that our lands, which we had awaited for a long time, are now liberated from occupation and we are living through a major historical moment. He said the knowledge gained at the conference could be systematized and submitted to the government.

Fariz Huseynov, professor of finance at the University of North Dakota, said the conference was dedicated to a very crucial and significant topic. He spoke about the preparation of plans for the reconstruction of the regional economy and the elimination of all threatening problems. Noting that serious damage was inflicted not only on the civilian population, but also on our territories, the professor stressed the urgency to calculate the damage. At the initial stage Mr. Huseynov touched upon the issues regarding the number of people coming to the liberated territories, the establishment of communications and the activation of education and health services.

Associate Professor of World Economy Department at BEU,  PhD. in Economics Hazi Eynalov made an extensive presentation on "Prospects for the development of agriculture in the liberated territories." He spoke in detail about the agricultural potential of the occupied regions, the priority areas for the regions as well as the initial and necessary steps to be taken to develop agriculture in the liberated areas. H. Eynalov further talked about the positive results that agricultural development could produce. He said it would make a special contribution to food supply and maintenance of food security in the country and attract new investments, as well as increase non-oil exports and crop turnover. Mr. Eynalov touched upon the projects implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the field of agriculture in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as proposals for agricultural development.

Associate Professor at Auburn University, Dr. Samir Huseynov said that the active phase of the war was over, while the passive military phase was still going on. Emphasizing the devastation and negative effects of the conflict, the rapporteur stated that economic policy in the region should be aimed at establishing and maintaining peace.

Then, the head of  UNEC Center for Empirical Research, PhD. in Economics Khatai Aliyev made a presentation on “The impact of the Patriotic War on the transformation of thought in society and the satisfaction of life of population.” He spoke about the important role of social factors in ensuring sustainable development and the impact of the patriotic war on the welfare of the population. He also stated that unification of people around President Ilham Aliyev in the Patriotic War would increase their reliance on economic and political reforms in the post-war period, as well as increase their effectiveness.

A Visiting Professor at the Department of Government of Cornell University, PhD. in Economics Jeyhun Mahmudlu analyzed this issue from viewpoint of conflictology.

The conference ended with answering the questions of the participants.
