A memorial event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy has been held at Baku Engineering University (BEU).

After observing a one-minute silence in honor of the martyrs and playing National Anthem, a video dedicated to the January 20th tragedy was shown.

At the event, organized with the support of the "One Volunteer" student organization, the rector of BEU Yagub Piriyev emphasized that January 20  is a symbol of our people's heroism, their struggle for freedom, and their indomitable will, calling it a day of honor.

The rector touched upon the main factors and historical facts that led to the January 20 tragedy, pointing out that the Soviet Union's leadership at the time was directly responsible for organizing and participating in this bloody crime. He also highlighted the measures taken to conceal this atrocity. He noted that the courageous step taken by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who had always stood by the people, broke this malicious plan. Despite being removed from all positions and under strict surveillance, Heydar Aliyev risked his life and came to Azerbaijan's permanent representation in Moscow the day after the tragedy to expose the criminals responsible for the bloody events before the international community.

Yagub Piriyev stated that it was thanks to Heydar Aliyev's initiative that the first political and legal evaluation of the January 20 tragedy was made on November 21, 1990 by the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The rector also mentioned that after Heydar Aliyev's return to political power, January 20 was declared a National Day of Mourning, and the Milli Majlis adopted the relevant decision. He noted that steps were taken to immortalize the memory of the martyrs and ensure their social protection.

Under the leadership of Victorious Commander-in-Chief, President Ilham Aliyev, the heroic Azerbaijani Army liberated our lands from Armenian occupation, and our sovereignty was fully restored. He expressed that the souls of all the martyrs who gave their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of our homeland are now at peace, with the proud Azerbaijani flag flying high everywhere in our country.

Later, Sadig Gurbanov, the chairman of the committee of the Milli Majlis and a member of parliament, stated that the January 20 tragedy was etched in the history of Azerbaijan as the peak of the national liberation movement for independence, freedom, and sovereignty. He highlighted the historical services of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the formation of the Azerbaijani nation and the courageous steps he took to provide a legal-political evaluation of the bloody tragedy. He also praised the efforts of Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev in liberating Azerbaijani lands from occupation, saying that all martyrs had sacrificed their lives to achieve this goal.

Saying that Great Leader Heydar Aliyev determined not only the present day but also the future of the people, and that this policy is being continued in line with the challenges of the new era under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Sadig Gurbanov noted in his speech that historical Victory gained in the 44-day Patriotic War, the anti-terrorist operation that lasted less than 24 hours last year had surprised the the most advanced countries this victory is still being investigated by them. He emphasized that in the current complex geopolitical situation, Azerbaijan does not need a new politician to achieve even greater successes in the future. The member of parliament urged students to work harder, become intelligent and worthy citizens of a victorious country, and support the leader who guided Azerbaijan to its victories by remaining loyal to the ideas and principles of the National Leader.

Next, the chair of the BEU Women's Council Atraba Gul, and Nazrin Babayeva, a fourth-year student of the university, also gave speeches. In their addresses, they emphasized that the memory of the victims of the January 20 tragedy, one of the glorious pages of our history, will forever live in the hearts of our people.
