Baku Engineering University (BEU) has hosted a commemorative event on the 33rd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.
First, the memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide was honored, and then a video clip reflecting the tragedy was demonstrated.
Speaking at the event, Rector Yagub Piriyev characterized the Khojaly tragedy that occurred 33 years ago as the most terrible act of genocide in world history. Recalling that during this terrible terror, a city with a population of more than 7 thousand people was razed to the ground in one night, and innocent people were brutally murdered precisely because they were Azerbaijanis, the Rector emphasized the ugly goals aimed at by the enemy in the bloody events. Emphasizing that today the souls of the Khojaly martyrs are happy, the Rector noted that as a result of the Patriotic War, unique in our centuries-old history under the leadership of the Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, as well as successful anti-terrorist operation, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our republic have been fully ensured, and the city of Khojaly has been cleared of separatists. Yagub Piriyev added that on the eve of the next anniversary of the genocide, the President's acquaintance with the work done in the field of restoration of individual houses and infrastructure in the Khojaly region aroused feelings of infinite pride in each of us. Noting that the other day, our head of state signed an Order “On the Establishment of the Khojaly Genocide Memorial Complex in the City of Khojaly” in order to promote the genocide at the international level and perpetuate the dear memory of the victims of the tragedy, the rector drew attention to the work done so far in this regard. He mentioned that the first legal and political assessment of the tragedy was given by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. Moreover, informing the world community about the event has always been among the important directions of President Ilham Aliyev’s activity. In particular, at the initiative of First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation is systematically and consistently working to inform the international community about the facts about the Khojaly genocide.
Yagub Piriyev pointed out that the anniversary of the Khojaly genocide has already become a symbol of the unity and national fanaticism of the Azerbaijani people and stressed the importance of continuous propaganda work to inform the world community about the events, despite our revenge on the enemy.
Later, Shikar Gasimov, professor of the Social Studies Department of BEU, delivered an extensive report. He brought to mind the deportation and genocide policy that Armenians have been implementing against our people for centuries with historical facts. Furthermore, he provided detailed information about the causes and consequences of the Khojaly tragedy, and stressed the importance of conveying historical realities to future generations.
After the event, the BEU staff visited the monument erected in Khatai district as a sign of respect for the victims of the Khojaly tragedy.
University employees commemorated the victims of the genocide and laid flowers in front of the monument.
