A commemorative event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy has been organized at the Baku Engineering University (BEU). First of all, the Rector of BEU, Professor Havar Mammadov and the teaching staff of the University visited an exhibition of students' handicrafts dedicated to the memory of the martyrs in the lobby.
The commemorative event inaugurated with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who died for the freedom, independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Following the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a video reflecting the history of the January 20 tragedy was demonstarted.
In his speech, Rector H.Mammadov emphasized the importance of the events of January 20 in the history of independence of the Azerbaijani people. He noted that the army units sent to Baku by the leadership of the Soviet Empire in gross violation of the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and the norms of international law committed ruthless crimes and massacres. Hundreds of innocent people fighting for national liberation were murdered in armed aggression. The rector said that the intention of the Soviet leadership to break the will of the people, the national liberation movement could not be realized, and our people, who gave martyrs along the way, continued their struggle for national liberation and Azerbaijan gained independence. Noting that National Leader Heydar Aliyev and his family members came to the permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow on January 21 immediately after the tragedy, they protested against the bloody operation committed by the USSR leadership and demanded that all perpetrators of the tragedy be punished, the Professor stated that a real legal and political assessment of these events could be possible only after the return of the Great Leader to power.
Noting that President Ilham Aliyev continues to strengthen the social protection of people with disabilities and the families of martyrs in connection with the events of January 20, the state pays special attention and care to this category of people, H.Mammadov said that memories of victims of January 20 will live forever in the hearts of our people.
Then the head of the Department of Social Sciences of BEU, associate professor Bilal Dedayev, a student of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering Ugur Piriyev made speeches at the event. During speesches, they touch on the events and historical facts related to the events of January 20.
At the end, the students performed a lyrical-choreographic composition "Mother's Hare" dedicated to the memory of the babies who murdered on the night of January 20.
