Azerbaijan hosts 13th International Conference on Thermal Engineering for first time

Under the joint arrangement of Baku Engineering University (BEU) and Ryerson University, “13th International Conference on Thermal Engineering: Theory and Applications” has started (May 23-25).

Speaking at the opening of the conference, BEU Rector, Professor Havar Mammadov talked about the successful development of Azerbaijan during independence and stressed that under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan became one of the leading countries in the region in the application of innovative engineering.

Touching upon the importance of organizing the conference in Azerbaijan for the first time, the Rector added that it would have a positive impact on the development of young scientists, as well as the expansion of scientific ties. Reminding that the international event had been held in Canada, India, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey earlier, Havar Mammadov noted that the conference was attended by 70 experts and leading scientists from different countries. Furthermore, the Rector mentioned the decision of Organizing Committee of the "Conference of Materials and Energy," organized by the University of Lorraine, France, to participate in the conference (ICTEA) held at BEU.

The Head of the University emphasized that the conference aimed to bring together researchers engaged in the application of experimental, analytical, or theoretical thermal and energy engineering and covered the topical fields such as "Thermal Transformation," "Environmental Engineering," "Biofuels," "Renewable Energy," "Process Control and Optimization," "Waste Management," "Polmer's processing technologies."

Making mention of the need for training personnel in the development of this field in higher education institutions of the country, the Rector stressed that BEU also provided training specialists in the field of energy.

In his speech, Havar Mammadov thanked the local and foreign guests who came to the event.

Deputy Minister of Education, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of BEU Idris Isayev stated that the reports and discussions to be heard at the conference would increase the relevance of issues facing the world globally in the field of materials and energy. Emphasizing that an important role of energy factor in the development of society, the Deputy Minister added that this factor currently played a key strategic role in the development of a number of countries.

Idris Isayev pointed out the very serious work being done under the leadership of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to fully engage renewable energy, the projects being implemented, the country's perspective economic development, the improvement of the environment, as well as ensuring the efficient use of water resources, as well as sustainable energy sources.

The ministry official stressed that from the first days, special attention was paid to the construction of energy infrastructure and ensuring energy security as an important part of the process of restoration of the territories liberated from the occupation as a result of the 44-day Patriotic War. Idris Isayev underlined that by taking into account the great potential of water, solar and wind energy in these areas, the Karabakh and East Zangazur economic regions  were declared "green energy" zones , which was the product of a strategic approach in line with global challenges and modern development trends.

Idris Isayev spoke in-depth about the environmental impact of issues, including waste generation, climate change, population growth, water pollution and ozone depletion, wishing success to the conference at the end of his speech.

Acting President of ANAS, member of the Board of Trustees of BEU Arif Hashimov highly appreciated the organization of such conferences in Azerbaijan in terms of conducting scientific research.

Bringing to the attention that one of the new challenges was sustainable socio-economic development, Arif Hashimov pointed out that this was one of the main priorities of the state of Azerbaijan. The academician added that the concept of sustainable socio-economic development consisted of environmental, social and economic components.

Arif Hashimov stressed the possibility of achieving sustainable development only when environmental problems were resolved.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Morocco to Azerbaijan Mohamed Adil Embarsh spoke about the existing relations with Azerbaijan on bilateral and continental levels.

Giving special emphasis to Azerbaijan's success in the field of energy, the ambassador said that Azerbaijan was an oil and gas producing country, played an important role in the international energy market and took a bold step by investing in renewable energy. Furthermore, the diplomat touched upon the large solar power plant in Morocco, by adding that  the country was carrying out important work in the field of renewable energy.

Conference co-chair Saghir Ziad expressed his deep gratitude to BEU for hosting the event and said the event would take place next year in Cairo. He expressed his confidence that the conference participants would have fond memories of Azerbaijan.

Mohammed El Ganaoui, Professor at the University of Lorraine, thanked BEU administration for their support in organizing the conference. Highlighting that BEU was chosen as the right venue for the conference, Mohammed El Ganaoui stressed that the University had educated students in physics and mathematics. In his speech, the professor shared his views on materials, energy and climate change with the conference participants.

Later, certificates were presented to the invited speakers participating in the conference.

During the section meetings of the two-day conference, prof. Rachid Bennacer, International PhD Affairs Coordinator  at the University of Paris-Saclay, prof. Biagio Morrone, prof. Abdelilah Benyoussef from the Academy of Science, Morroco, prof. A.David Bassir from Belfort-Montbéliard University, prof. Jean-Michel Nunzi from Queen’s University, Canada, prof. Ali Zaoui from Lille University, France, T.Yusaf from Australia, G.Ziskind from Israel, K.Siddiqui and S.Poncet from Canada, S.Kachhwaha from India, O.Chaalal from UAE and others will make reports.
