Urban Ecology - Fall semester

This course provides an ecological perspective on the environmental challenges and opportunities related to urban development, adopting an interdisciplinary approach. Urban Ecology and Environment is a Semester course offered to the M.Tech Urban Development and Management programme students.

The course is structured under five modules:

  • Module 1. introduces the concepts of urban ecology and
  • Module 2. focuses on green spaces, biodiversity conservation, and conflicts.
  • Module 3. focuses on the urban environmental issues, such as air and water quality.
  • Module 4. focuses on the analytical tools, such as Environmental Impact Analysis.
  • Module 5. deals with the challenges of climate change and mitigation and adaptation measures for cities.

Environmental Law - Fall semester

Environmental law and policy is one of the developed fields in the system of legal and environmental sciences. In the framework of the science of ecological law, the analysis of the legislation on environmental protection and its effective use is carried out, proposals are put forward for the improvement of that legislation, as well as the adoption of normative acts that will regulate new relations.

The purpose of the subject is the correct definition of the subject of legal regulation and the correct application of legal norms. Environmental law is one of the independent legal fields included in the legal system of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Environmental law regulates social (ecological) relations in the field of interaction between society and nature for the benefit of current and future generations.

At the beginning of the course, the sources of ecological law, the ecological-legal regime of ecological use and its protection, state regulation of ecological use and environmental protection, and ecological-legal responsibility are studied. Then, in a special part, the use of each component of the environment (water, soil, air, etc.) and the ecological-legal regime of its protection are studied.

Ecological Monitoring - Spring semester

This course provides information about "Ecological Monitoring", its philosophy and position in the Environmental field, the most important approaches, analyses and methods. Students learn about the structure and application of this ecological monitoring.

  • Analysis of processes occurring in the ecosystem, taking into account ecological sustainability, and prevention of harmful effects
  • Providing a forecast of processes occurring in the ecosystem
  • Knowledge about the application of ecological monitoring
  • To create a basis for better study of the courses taken later: “Environmental Impact Assessment”, “Ecological Expertise”, “Ecological Engineering”, etc.

After completing the course, students should know:

  • What is analytical thinking related to ecological monitoring
  • Identification and specification of research questions
  • Identification of methods and approaches of ecological monitoring following different parts of the course, including modeling systems, using ICT, and electronic resources

Urban Environment and Infrastructure - Fall semester

The objective of the course is to teach the management of environmental issues in cities, including the prevention of potential ecological problems, management of air, water, soil, and waste, as well as the development of adaptation and mitigation measures for climate change. Additionally, the course aims to provide information on modern forms of urban infrastructure and their management.

Upon completing the course, students will gain comprehensive knowledge about the ecological status of urbanized areas and their management, as well as urban infrastructure.

Environmental Law and Policy - Fall semester
