Baku Engineering University (BEU) has organized special classes dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.
After a minute of silence in memory of the heroes and innocent victims of the Khojaly massacre, who died in the battles for freedom, independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, lectures on the genocide were given in classes.
The lectures given by the employees of the Department of Social Sciences of the University emphasized that the Khojaly genocide was one of the bloodiest crimes committed against Azerbaijani people in the 20th century. It was also stated that on the night of 25-26 February 1992, Armenian armed forces violating all international legal norms attacked the civilian population of the sieged town of Khojaly with heavy military equipment, perpetrated torture with unprecedented brutality and razed the town to the ground. It was noted that as a result of this horrible crime, 613 peaceful Azerbaijanis including 63 children, 106 women and 70 elderly people were brutally killed because of their ethnicity. In consequence 8 families were totally exterminated, 130 children lost one and other 25 children lost both parents. In addition, 487 civilians were seriously injured and 1,275 people were taken hostage. The fate of 150 hostages, including 68 women and 26 children, still remains unknown.
The lectures emphasizing the historical mission of National Leader Heydar Aliyev on giving a political and legal assessment to the Khojaly genocide enumerated significant decisions taken in this direction at the initiative of the Great Leader. Every year under President Ilham Aliyev’s instructions the Khojaly genocide is commemorated with large-scale events and purposeful work is done within the international campaign "Justice for Khojaly!" organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Eventually, the massacre was given an international political assessment and the genocide was recognized by a number of countries.
As a result of 44-Day Patriotic War, the glorious Azerbaijani Army under the leadership of Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev restored peace and international law and avenged the martyrs and innocent victims of Khojaly.
In special classes, names of the National Heroes of Azerbaijan, who demonstrated unparalleled courage during the assault on Khojaly, were mentioned and students' questions were answered around the lectures.
