BEU hosts training on “Suicide prevention”

The Youth Foundation of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan Student Youth Organizations' Union (ASYOU) and the Center for Youth Development and Career have jointly organized a training on “Suicide prevention” at Baku Engineering University (BEU).

In his opening speech, ASYOU employee Rashad Zeynalov noted the importance of the training.

Stating that the event was dedicated to a topical issue, BEU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs Bayram Huseynzada stressed that according to statistics, the number of suicide cases in Azerbaijan was not high compared to other countries. The Vice-Rector emphasized the measures taken to prevent suicides and suicide attempts, as well as the importance of proper awareness-raising in this area. At the end of his speech, he called on students to take an active part in the discussions during the training.

In his speech, Ibrahim Mehdiyev, an employee of the Youth Foundation, drew attention to suicide rates among youth aged 18 to 28. He mentioned that the main reason was the non-serious approach of young people to psychology, the lack of professional psychologists in many educational institutions, as well as the role of society.

Coordinator of the Center for Youth Development and Career Nihad Mammadli provided information about the organization he represented and the measures taken in this direction. He pointed out that by the Order of President Ilham Aliyev, the offices of the center had been set up in 55 districts and cities and nearly 200 employees of the organization played an important role in the personal development of thousands of young people.

Later, psychologist Fidan Azergizi made a presentation on "Suicide is not the end." She touched upon that suicidal thoughts presumably stemmed from the factors such as family issues, personality disorders, traumatic events, loss, drug and alcohol use, as well as depression. Highligting warning signs of suicide and related emotions, the psychologist noted the work done in this area.

The training continued in an interactive form.

The event ended with answering questions of students
