BEU Host Event on Youth's Role in Emergency Situation

An event titled "The Role of Youth in Prevention and Elimination of Emergency Situations" has been held at Baku Engineering University (BEU) in collaboration with the Sumgayit Regional Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES).

The event opened with a minute of silence in memory of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the martyrs, followed by the performance of the State Anthem.

Delivering the opening address, BEU Rector Yagub Piriyev spoke about the consistent policy pursued in strengthening the country's security system, enhancing emergency preparedness, and particularly in fostering the patriotic spirit among young people — a course defined by National Leader Heydar Aliyev and successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev in line with the demands of the modern era. In his remarks, the Rector noted that in today's world, natural disasters, technological accidents, and other emergency situations pose serious challenges for both states and societies. Effective responses to such challenges depend not only on the activities of relevant state bodies, but also on the level of preparedness and social responsibility of all segments of society, especially the younger generation. Yagub Piriyev emphasized that expanding awareness-raising measures, strengthening preventive mechanisms, and increasing public participation are essential to achieving sustainable results in emergency preparedness and response. In this regard, the development of young people as knowledgeable, proactive, and psychologically resilient individuals is of great importance. He noted that special attention is paid at BEU to instilling values grounded in civic responsibility, a culture of safety, and the principle of being beneficial to society.

Colonel Vagif Fatullayev, Head of the MES Sumgayit Regional Center, spoke about the role of youth in the country's development. He recalled the policy implemented by National Leader Heydar Aliyev to ensure that young people receive a modern education and develop into professional specialists, as well as its successful outcomes. He also highlighted the achievements of patriotic youth — guided by the ideals of the National Leader and under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev — and outlined the tasks ahead. Speaking about the projects and initiatives undertaken by the MES to strengthen youth preparedness for emergency situations and increase their engagement in this field, Vagif Fatullayev drew attention to the Ministry's prompt operational activities during natural disasters both within and outside the country. He placed particular emphasis on the importance of volunteerism, psychological preparedness, and public support among young people in this domain.

Subsequently, speeches were delivered by Elbrus Maharramov, Deputy Head of the Absheron District State Fire Protection Unit and Major of Internal Service; Sabir Asgarov, Senior Adviser of the Territorial Bodies Affairs Division of the Sumgayit Regional Center; Yalchin Zeynalov, Senior Lecturer, and Mirramin Yunusov, Lecturer, both of the General Subjects Department at BEU; as well as Aysu Jabrayilova, a 4th-year student in the Urban Planning program. The speakers shared their views on emergency management, fire safety regulations, and efforts to enhance civil defense knowledge among both local and international students at BEU, along with related awareness-raising activities. The speeches also included information on the MES "Emergency Volunteerism" program, with particular emphasis on the active participation of young people in this initiative.

Video footage was subsequently screened on the operational directions of MES forces, fire safety in educational institutions, and training exercises conducted by the Sumgayit Regional Center.

As part of the event, Adam Mammadov, a 3rd-year student in the Transport Service program at BEU, presented a smart system for real-time monitoring and analysis of household energy consumption (EnergyX), while Tahira Baylarova, a 3rd-year student in Electronics Engineering, presented a real-time monitoring system (HydroSense) designed to prevent failures at electrical power stations.

At the conclusion of the event, participants familiarized themselves with specialized emergency response equipment and machinery on the university grounds, and were briefed by MES personnel on the purpose and operating procedures of the equipment.
