BEU Student Admitted to Prestigious Italian University

Turgut Mammadov, a fourth-year student in the Chemical Engineering program at Baku Engineering University (BEU), has been admitted to the master's program at the University of Padua in Italy.

Recognized globally as a prestigious research-oriented institution, the University of Padua ranks 200th in the QS rankings and holds fourth place among universities in Italy.

During his undergraduate studies, Turgut Mammadov gained diverse research experience in BEU's modern laboratories with the support of his instructors. In the initial stage of his research, he conducted experiments in extraction processes and the isolation of natural components, working with the plant species Peganum. The aim of this research was to synthesize the compound harmine from the plant, to investigate an economically viable synthesis method for industrial applications, and to study the properties of the compound.

In the final years of his undergraduate education, he worked on a research project focused on the synthesis of graphene oxide. The project involved the application of a modified Hummer method for the oxidation and exfoliation of graphite. The results of the project were analyzed using XRD, FTIR, and other methods, and were presented at the International Conference on Management and Control in the Solution of Engineering Problems (MaCoSEP 2025) under the title "Nanostructured Graphene Oxide Sheets in Ecology." This project enabled Turgut Mammadov to gain foundational knowledge in the areas of 2D materials, oxidation, functional groups, and surface properties.

In a subsequent period, he participated in a project on the use of natural fillers in the production of polyethylene pipes and the modification of material properties. Within this project, he investigated the effects of olive pit and reed powder on the density and mechanical properties of polyethylene materials. Carried out in collaboration with Polymart LLC, the project provided him with practical experience in the transition from laboratory to industrial scale over the course of one month.

Turgut Mammadov also presented his research online at a conference held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, entitled "The Role of Innovative Technologies in Improving Chemistry Teaching Methods." This research work is set to be published shortly in the Digest Journal of Nanomaterials and Biostructures.
