Materials Science Laboratory Opened at BEU
May 5, 2026
An opening ceremony for the newly established Materials Science Laboratory at the Faculty of Architecture and Construction of Baku Engineering University (BEU) has been held.
The event was attended by the university's rector Yagub Piriyev, faculty members, and students.
In the opening Piriyev described the establishment of new laboratory as a significant step on strengthening the university's scientific research infrastructure. Noted that the field of materials science occupies an important place in architecture and construction engineering, and that the new laboratory will play a meaningful role in the research of innovative materials, the determination of quality indicators, and the application of modern technologies. The rector, emphasizing that laboratories established at BEU in recent years serve to train highly qualified specialists in line with labor market demands, also expressed confidence that the scientific research to be conducted there will contribute to the development of the construction and industrial sectors.
Subsequently, Yasin Khalilov, Assoc. Prof. at the Department of Design, provided information on the concept, main goals, and objectives of the laboratory. It was noted that, as part of the laboratory, a materials museum (the first of its kind in the country) has been established. The museum displays hundreds of specimens covering nearly 15 classes of construction materials. The broad-spectrum presentation of materials provides students enrolled in construction, architecture, design, and decorative applied arts programs with the opportunity to explore materials not only theoretically but also physically, to identify their fundamental properties, and to apply various finishing techniques in a practical setting.
The laboratory is equipped with the essential minimum instruments and equipment required for determining the physical and mechanical properties of ceramics, adhesive materials, concrete, stone, and other materials — creating a favorable learning environment for students to gain a deeper understanding of the subject of Materials Science.
Following the familiarization tour, Rector Piriyev held a conversation with students, and also touched on the future development prospects of the laboratory, offering relevant recommendations regarding its further improvement and the strengthening of its material and technical base.
