Biotechnology Scientific-Research and Teaching Laboratory Opened at BEU
February 19, 2026
A Biotechnology Research and Teaching Laboratory has been inaugurated at Baku Engineering University (BEU). As one of the rare scientific and educational centers among higher education institutions, the new laboratory will create extensive opportunities for conducting fundamental and applied research in the field of biotechnology, while also enhancing students' practical knowledge and skills.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, BEU Rector Yaqub Piriyev stated that the establishment of a laboratory meeting international standards forms part of the university's strategic development program and will ensure a qualitatively new phase in scientific research conducted in the fields of biotechnology and other biological sciences. The Rector emphasized that admissions to the "Biotechnology" specialization at BEU have been conducted over the past two years, with students choosing this field scoring above 515 points, and expressed his confidence that strengthening the laboratory infrastructure at the university will contribute to the training of competitive specialists. Yaqub Piriyev further added that the laboratory will also serve as a platform for engaging young researchers in scientific projects, supporting startup initiatives, and expanding international scientific collaborations. It will likewise increase opportunities for university scientists to participate in international programs and lay the groundwork for the implementation of joint research projects.
Subsequently, Adil Allahverdiyev, Director of the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Preventive Medicine named after V.Y. Akhundov under the Ministry of Health, delivered a speech. It was noted that the commissioning of the laboratory is of great importance in terms of strengthening the country's scientific potential and advancing innovative medical research. The infrastructure created will serve to enhance the practical knowledge and skills of young specialists, broaden the application of scientific findings, and foster the formation of a modern research environment.
Following the speeches, participants were given a tour of the laboratory. It was reported that the laboratory, which provides extensive capabilities for fundamental and applied research, is equipped with a high-speed refrigerated centrifuge for the analysis of biological samples, a thermal incubator for cultivating microorganism and cell cultures, a deep freezer for material storage, an ultrasonic homogenizer for the disruption of cell structures and extraction of biomolecules, a fluorescent trinocular microscope enabling precise observation and digital documentation, as well as other state-of-the-art equipment. The laboratory will operate as a scientific institution of strategic importance in terms of the comprehensive analysis of biological samples, the study of cells and microorganisms, and the conduct of the most topical research.
