Research by BEU Scholar Opens New Opportunities Against Antibiotic Resistance

A scientific article co-authored by Namig Shikhaliyev, Professor and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Baku Engineering University (BEU), has been published in a prestigious international journal.

The article, titled "Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties of Fe-, Cu-, Ni-, and Zn-Containing Tris- and Bis-(2,4-bis(trichloromethyl)-1,3,5-triazapentadienato) Complexes," was published in the journal "Advances in Biology and Earth Sciences," which is classified in the Q1 category in the Scopus database.

The growing resistance to antibiotics is currently one of the major problems facing global healthcare. In this regard, the identification of new and effective antimicrobial compounds is considered a relevant research direction in modern chemistry and biology. The study examined the antimicrobial effects of a number of metal complexes against bacteria and fungi in this area.

As part of the research, the antibacterial and antifungal properties of metal complexes based on iron (Fe), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) were investigated. The activity of the complexes was tested on both Gram-negative (Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, etc.) bacteria, as well as on yeast fungi of the Candida genus.

According to the results, the metal complexes studied demonstrated a certain degree of effectiveness against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

In terms of antifungal activity, the highest result was recorded for the nickel complex, and the lowest for the copper complex. The effect of the nickel complex was 1.5–1.7 times stronger than that of the copper complex.

The results obtained are of scientific significance for the development of new antimicrobial compounds in combating antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, as well as for their potential application in medicine and biotechnology.
