Baku Engineering University (BEU) together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Republic of Azerbaijan has held an educational event dedicated to the fight against illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and drug addiction.
Bayram Huseynzada, BEU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, spoke about the importance of the meeting and said that drug addiction was one of the most painful and sad problems of our time. Noting that the fight against drugs in many countries was not carried out at the state level, the Vice-Rector informed the participants about the measures taken by the state in this direction in Azerbaijan. He said that the Decree "On measures against drug addiction and drug trafficking" was first signed by National Leader Heydar Aliyev on August 26, 1996. Emphasizing that anti-drug measures were always in the center of attention of the state, the Vice-Rector underlined that “State Program for Combating Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Their Precursors and Drug Addiction for 2019-2024” which was the 4th program approved by the Order of President Ilham Aliyev dated July 22, 2019 to fight against this social scourge in our country was being successfully carried out.
In his speech, the Vice-Rector spoke about the negative effects of drugs on human life and the body, and called on young people to stay away from these harmful habits.
Head of the department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), Police Major Elshad Hajiyev stressed that the meeting was dedicated to a very trending issue. Giving detailed information about the problems created by drugs for society and its consequences, the ministry official said that it was important that not only the state, but also every member of society played an active role in the fight against drugs.
Head of the Department noted that a serious fight against drug addiction was implemented in the country, and successful operative-search measures were carried out to identify and bring to justice those involved in drug trafficking. Noting that by using the opportunities of modern information technology purposeful work was being done to prevent drug trafficking and the spread of drug addiction through education, E.Hajiyev emphasized the preventive, operative-search measures. Adding that the scope of public awareness was further expanded, the head of the department called on students to be careful, emphasized that drug addiction, one of the most painful problems of mankind and a source of serious danger, was equally dangerous for everyone, regardless of social status, and gave his recommendations.
Police Major Ibrahim Mammadov, Chief Commissioner of the Absheron District Drug Control Department, spoke about the work carried out to investigate and prosecute those involved in the distribution, use and sale of drugs among young people. Noting joint efforts were made with relevant agencies to return young people addicted to drugs to a healthy lifestyle, I.Mammadov emphasized the measures taken in this direction in the Absheron District.
Vusala Imamguliyeva, a member of the board of the Student Trade Union Committee of BEU, a third-year student of the Education Faculty, spoke about the role of youth in the fight against drugs.
The meeting continued with answering students' questions.
At the end, a video entitled "Say no to drugs" was demonstrated about the harms of drugs.
