Academic staff and students of Baku Engineering University (BEU) have visited Genocide Memorial Complex in Guba city.
At first, the memory of the victims was commemorated with a minute of silence during the visit dedicated to March 31 – the Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis.
The visitors were informed that the complex was erected in the memory of tens of thousands of Azerbaijanis who died as a result of the massacres committed by Armenian-bolshevik armed groups in Azerbaijan in 1918, and displayed unique historical archive documents to commemorate our national and spiritual values, historical monuments and ancestral roots.
It was emphasized that a mass grave was accidentally discovered during the excavations for construction purposes in Guba city in 2007, and according to the preliminary investigation, the grave was concerning the genocide committed by Armenian-bolshevik armed groups against the Guba population in May 1918. The exposition of the museum reflects the history of the genocide committed against the Muslim population of Baku, Shamakhi, Guba, Javad and Goychay, 5 uyezds of Baku Governorate, in March-July 1918.
During the acquaintance with the archival documents, the participants were provided with information that only in the decree “On the Genocide of Azerbaijanis” signed by National Leader Heydar Aliyev on March 26, 1998 those terrible occurrences were politically assessed in an adequate way and March 31 was declared “the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.”
Guba Genocide Memorial Complex was established by the respective Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated December 30, 2009 in order to convey the truth to the world community, protect the national memory of future generations of the Azerbaijani people and perpetuate the memory of genocide victims. On September 18, 2013, the President of Azerbaijan attended the opening of Guba Genocide Memorial Complex .
Of note, consisting of 19 sections, the museum’s exposition is presented in Azerbaijani, Russian and English languages. The exposition starts with photos reflecting the peaceful Guba on the eve of the 1918 events. Moreover, photos and historical facts depicting representatives of Azerbaijani, Lezgi, Jewish and other nations, as well as people from different social strata were displayed.
