The ceremony started with a minute of silence for the memory of martyrs. National Anthem of Azerbaijan was sounded and a documentary about genocide was demonstrated. According to the press service of BEU, prof. Havar Mammadov spoke about tragedies that Azerbaijanis suffered from. He told about the destruction of over 1000 villages and mass killings in Baku, Quba, Shamakhi, Goychay, Salyan, Garabakh, Zangazur, Nakhchivan, Lankaran, Ganja and other places by Bolshevik-armenian armed forces in March of 1918. It was also mentioned that this historical fact was hidden from our people. By the decree of National Leader Haydar Aliyev on 26 March 1998, March 31 was declared the Genocide Day of Azerbaijanis.
MP Fazail Ibrahimli stated that the genocide is the proof of hatred and hostility of Armenian dashnaks toward Azerbaijanis. The hostility sparked in 1905-1907 and was carried on with Khojali Genocide in 1992. It was also stated that on the last two days of March in 1908, over 12 thousand people were slaughtered only in Baku. Commemoration ceremony continued with other speeches.
